Why K-12 Teachers and Their Students Need Investments in Child Care

To meet the caregiving needs of the K-12 educator workforce and the developmental needs of the youngest students, the United States needs sustained, significant federal investments in the accessibility and affordability of high-quality child care.

Child care has become increasingly unaffordable for all families in the United States. Teachers face particular caregiving challenges—something that the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown into stark relief. Virtual learning and quarantine protocols, while necessary to keep students and staff safe, have forced many teachers to simultaneously teach students from home and care for their own young children. At a time of heightened teacher shortages and low teacher wages, educators caring for their own young children need access to affordable child care. High-quality child care also has substantial and numerous benefits for child development, which helps students come to school ready to learn, allowing teachers to focus on delivering engaging instruction. To meet the caregiving needs of the K-12 educator workforce and the developmental needs of the youngest students, the United States needs sustained, significant federal investments in the accessibility and affordability of high-quality child care.

Parent Workshops

Child care providers have one of the most important jobs - the care and education of children during the most crucial early learning years. Solano Family and Children’s Services offers training and workshops which cover critical early childhood issues and contain relevant information. Through various activities, providers gain practical knowledge, which we hope will inspire improvement in the quality of care they offer to the families they serve.

Parents will also benefit greatly from any of our provider trainings they wish to attend or the parenting events we hold. In addition, we offer a monthly “Parent Café.” SFCS Parent Cafés are a FREE parent night with meaningful and guided conversations, where we share stories, get information on how to take care of ourselves and our families, and raise strong, happy children.

For an up-to-date listing of our workshops for providers and parents, please visit our Eventbrite site.

Reducing the Risk of Choking in Young Children at Mealtimes

Children under the age of 4 are at a high risk of choking while eating. Young children are still learning how to chew food properly, and they often swallow the food whole. Their small airways can become easily blocked. You can help reduce children’s risk of choking when eating by preparing food in certain ways, such as cutting food into small pieces and cooking hard food, like carrots, until it is soft enough to pierce with a fork. Remember, always supervise children during meals and snacks.

Teach Good Eating Habits
Sit and eat with children at meals and snacks. Remind children to take small bites of food
and swallow between bites. Eating together may help you quickly spot a child who might be
choking. Other tips to help prevent choking while eating include:
  • Only providing foods as part of meals and snacks served at a dining table or high chair. When serving infants, do not prop the bottle up on a pillow or other item for the baby to feed him or herself.
  • Allowing plenty of time for meals and snacks.
  • Making sure children are sitting upright while eating.
  • Reminding children to swallow their food before talking or laughing.
  • Modeling safe behavior for children to follow, including eating slowly, taking small bites, and chewing food completely before swallowing.
  • Encouraging older children to serve as role models for younger children as well. All childrenshould avoid playing games with food, as that may lead to an increased risk of choking.
